Riders begin the 85 cc 12-16 year old division at Riverglade Motocross Park Saturday during the Atlantic region motocross event.

"They loved the track and they turned in some great performances," said Riverglade co-owner Earl Doucette.

"It wasn't the best day to be a spectators, but the riders love it," he said. "There have been some changes at the track and there are going to be more. So far, the reviews on the changes are all positive."

Davey Fraser of Halifax captured the GP pro class title.

Abbey Landry of Colpitts Settlement won the veterans' pro class (40 and older) on a 450 bike.

Jackson Landry of Colpitts Settlement, the nephew of Abbey Landry, won the 50cc title for 7-8-year-olds.

Ryan MacKay of Riverview captured the 85cc title for 12-16-year-olds.

Devon Sleigh of Quispamsis took home the MX-2 junior crown.

The Atlantic series resumes June 11 in Mill Hill, N.S., near Kentville.

Riverglade hosts the Canadian pro nationals on July 30-31.

Kamloops to host Round 1 of the Monster Energy Motocross Nationals - Tillsonburg News - Ontario, CA

ound 1 of the nine-round 2011 Monster Energy Motocross Nationals is set to kick off June 5 at Whispering Pines Raceway in Kamloops, British Columbia.

The facility, located on native reserve land 25km north of Kamloops along the North Thompson River, has been in operation since 1999 and is one of the premier motocross tracks in Canada.

"This is the time of the year everyone involved in the sport of professional motocross racing looks forward to, the beginning of a new championship season. We're happy to announce that as per the past few years, Kamloops will get things underway," said Mark Stallybrass, president of CMRC, the official sanctioning body of the series in a press release. "We're also excited to have Nanaimo back on the schedule, which provides us with a more solid presence in British Columbia, and gives local fans on Vancouver Island a chance to see Campbell River's Dusty Klatt, the reigning champion, in action."

The multi-time National MX1 and MX2 Champion, Klatt, will find himself facing a host of contenders in defence of his MX1 crown, including his Yamaha Red Bull Blackfoot teammate Colton Facciotti.

Facciotti, defending MX1 Champion in 2010, saw his season cut short last year due to injuries. Although the Aldergrove, BC native is unanimously considered to be Klatt's main rival, a number of up-and-comers and veterans with something left to prove, Canadians as well as Americans, New Zealanders, and Europeans, are also in the wings looking to claim the elusive No.1 plate.

"When you're the defending champ, you have a bull's eye on your back. You're the guy everyone is gunning for and that puts a bit of extra stress on you. The first event of the season always brings a bit of added pressure because there are usually new riders in the mix, and everybody is out to score not only racing points but important psychological points. Although one race doesn't make a season, in many cases the first round gives you a fair idea what you're in for," said Klatt.

In the MX2 title hunt, Ottawa, Ontario's Tyler Medaglia, also riding for Calgary-based Yamaha Red Bull Blackfoot – the winningest team in Canadian motocross history – will be the man to beat. Like Klatt in the MX1 class, Medaglia will be up against the usual suspects, which include riders from Canada and abroad, not to mention his younger brother Jeremy Medaglia.

British Columbia, which has produced a number of top-flight motocross riders and national champions over the years, will be well represented on the circuit again this season. In addition to Klatt and Facciotti, mainland BC natives Broc Hoyer, Dylan Coombs, and Kohl Canaday, and Vancouver Islanders Nick Syrotuck, Derek Thompson, and Bryce Aspell will be on hand to campaign either the MX1 or MX2 series.

Round 2 of the Monster Energy Motocross Nationals takes place in Nanaimo June 12, one week after the Kamloops event. The western leg of the tour then travels to Calgary, Alberta and Morden, Manitoba, before heading east for the remaining five rounds.

Motocross races go tomorrow | by dwayne tingley - Breaking News, New Brunswick, Canada

Former rider Lee Steeves joins Riverglade Motocross Park

RIVER GLADE - Lee Steeves made a lot of memories during his days as a professional motocross rider and he helped create others for young competitors as an instructor on his own track near Salisbury.

He expects all of that experience will help him in his new venture.

Steeves has joined long-time motocross organizers and promoters Earl Doucette and Larry Northrup, who both also competed successfully, as co-owners and operators of Riverglade Motocross Park.

Doucette and Northrup were also part of the previous ownership group and Steeves is excited about joining them at Riverglade.

"They have a lot of expertise and I expect to learn a lot from them," Steeves said yesterday.

"As a former competitor, I also bring something to the group. I think I know what the riders and the fans are looking for so I'll try to design the track with all of that in mind."

Steeves has already made a couple of changes to the venerable 34-year-old track in preparation for tomorrow's Canadian Motorsport Racing Club's Atlantic region spring series event.

"As a rider, I always looked forward to racing at Riverglade because it was such a good track and a real test for everyone," said Steeves, who operated the Fox Hollow track for about 10 years.

"I like the idea of working on the track and making it even more exciting for everyone," he said. "I'm looking forward to helping the track flow a little better and that will create excitement.

"It's my job to build it and maintain it. I've made some tweaks already and there will be more changes for the nationals (July)."

Steeves expects about 400 riders to compete in tomorrow's races, which begin at 10 a.m. and run all day. Classes will range from 50cc competitors up to the 450s for pros.

All of the top pros from the Maritimes will compete.

"We've got some very good riders from this area and they'll be looking to see how they match up against the pros," Steeves said. "It's going to be an interesting day."

Alissa Hibbert a 22-year-old Kamloopsian takes on Women's class June 5 at Whispering Pines,

When the gun goes off in the Ladies Class at the first race of the Monster Energy Motocross Nationals next month, Alissa Hibbert might be caught looking around.

But Hibbert, a rookie making who will be making her professional debut, isn't planning on being left behind.

The nationals event is scheduled for June 5 at Whispering Pines, located north of Kamloops on Westsyde Road. It kicks off the series, which will comprise nine events ranging all the way from Nanaimo to Moncton and ending Aug. 21 in Walton, Ont.

Hibbert won't be going to Nanaimo or Walton or Moncton with the series - the only national event in which she'll take part is the Kamloops event, and she's not expecting to roll up the start line and dominate.

"I just want to get as much experience as I can," says Hibbert, a 22-year-old Kamloopsian. "The girls at that level are so good and I just want to . . . see where they ride and how they deal with the track.

"Maybe I'll talk to some of them and get some pointers."

Hibbert is new to racing but has spent a lot of time on a dirtbike.

Her family has been riding all her life and she started riding "five or six years ago."

And then came a twist of fate three years ago. Hibbert's cousin, Cody, tried to convince her to buy a racing bike, and did a pretty good job - she bought a Honda CRF 150R, and has raced eight teams at Whispering Pines this season.

"It's been really good," Alissa says. "I'm not finishing first, but I'm gaining a lot of experience and having a lot of fun."

Of course, the decision to start racing was met with mixed emotions from the family.

"My dad was pretty excited but my mom was nervous," Hibbert says. "It's something I could see myself doing for a while. But I'm 22 - I wish I had started years ago."

Lack of experience aside, Hibbert does have a competitive edge that comes from a lifetime of playing hockey.

Hibbert, a goaltender, had three consecutive shutouts in March to lead the Kamloops Vibe to the provincial senior A women's hockey title in Fort St. John.

She also competed at the Western Shield championships, for the top female senior teams in Western Canada, and has learned to deal with pressure and nerves and expectations.

"I'm pretty competitive," Hibbert explains. "Mentally, you learn to prepare yourself. This is my first (nationals event) but I've been to the Western Shield, and that's the highest level.

"I'm prepared to deal with the stress and all the nerves."

Hibbert, who manages two Petro-Canada stations in Kamloops, hopes this is the start of something great, but she's still easing herself into things. She hopes to compete in Williams Lake and Kelowna later this summer, but is focused only on June 5.

And Cody will be there, helping Alissa through her first race.

"He's racing in the amateur day Saturday," Alissa says. "But he plans to be there Sunday - he's calling himself part of my pit crew."
