National: Elite Sport and Nutrition
Columns, essays, commentaries These three sets of challenges above form the basis of the higher level nutritional planning I regularly address with my elite teams. However, before any of this higher order planning is discussed, it's critical to begin by teaching these athletes what an "athlete diet" looks like. You see, most young athletes really have no idea what they should and shouldn't be eating.

Sure, most of the athletes I work with know to avoid junk food. They also know that hydration is important, so many of them drink either water or Gatorade during training. Some even eat a few extra fruits and veggies a day.

Alberta: It's not MX - but it is racing!
Columns, essays, commentaries How do you have the most fun possible when it's -20 outside with 2ft of snow on the ground? Well if you are the AMRA, you prep a dozen 125cc four strokes to factory specs, and mount them with the same street tires front and rear. Then you convince the Canadian Motorcycle Shows that using 60,000 square ft to have an INDOOR ROAD RACE TRACK at the Calgary and Edmonton shows is a great idea. Now, with a track and bikes, all you need are racers. What if the Factory Stars working for the manufacturers at the shows agreed to race against the best mini road racers in Canada? Yes, they say? Well, why not put something on the line and make it a National Championship? Game on!

National: Honda to sell it all under one roof
Columns, essays, commentaries Honda Canada Inc. is moving to a new generation of retail outlets that will offer all its consumer products at one location -- from lawnmowers and snow throwers to motorcycles, cars and trucks.

The new concept, called Honda Centre in Quebec and Honda Powerhouse in the rest of Canada, is already in place at one Honda dealership in each of Quebec and Ontario and there are more to come, said Jim Miller, senior vice-president of Honda Canada.

International: 2007 MOTOCROSS OF NATIONS
Columns, essays, commentaries Funchal, 13 November 2006 - The 2007 FIM Motocross Of Nations, at Budds
Creek Motocross Park, MD on September 22-23, is expected to be the highlight
of the next season in the global motocross scene and to set an unforgettable

the epic Unadilla Valley Sports Center's edition.

In less than a year from now the whole motocross universe will focus on the
upcoming running of the biggest motocross race of the world to repeat, and
most likely to increase, the huge success of the '06 FIM MXoN held in a
memorable weekend in UK the past month of September.

Ontario: new Indoor track being built in Tillsonburg
Columns, essays, commentaries I was out riding this past weekend and I was near the site of the new Indoor track being built in Tillsonburg, so I thought I would detour and have a look. The steel structure is up and they are now beginning to install the walls, there is a platform inside the building and it looks to be coming along very well. Dave Chesterman tells me that they are still on target for opening in November 2006. For more information and up to date pictures go to their website www.chesterman.ca .

Questions without owners. The MXC staff answer questions
Columns, essays, commentaries Here at MXC, we try hard to give you the news that matters and answer any questions you have about this exciting sport we love. However, if you don't leave a method for us to contact you, we can't help. Here are a few questions we have received:

My 11 year old son is interested in buying a dirt bike. Where can he ride it?
If you live in the country, you most likely have a field near by, talk and get to know the owners and set up rules how your rider will and will not be riding on their land. Be polite and respect their wishes. Remember, their fields are their source of income. It doesn't hurt to visit some motocross races and hang out with other moto Moms and Dads, they will be happy to meet a new family entering the sport and will help out whenever possible! For tracks and schedules, www.cmrcracing.com has up-to-date listings with races around Canada all summer long.

What type of equipment does a motocross racer require and where can I buy gear?
First you will need a helmet that meets or exceeds the DOT standard. You will require shatter proof goggles, protective pants such as nylon, leather or standard mx pants. Long sleeve jersey or shirt covering the arms, a chest protector/deflector, gloves, and boots.
Most motorcycle dealers have a gear section for each type of motorcycle they sell. You can also Google some stores online if you know your sizes. Depending on how popular the sport is in your area, you can even buy some of your gear at the track, but it's best to come prepared. Nothing like the sad feeling of making the trip but not having the gear you need to enjoy the day!

Why is Mitchell Cooke so hot?????????? :) #1 fan
There's one thing the staff here at MXC try to be informed about, Motocross. Unfortunately, genes and the laws of attraction are something we know nothing about.

Where do I find riders point standings for the 2006 season?
If you race CMRC sanctioned events, their website is the number one place to go for official up-to-date information. Check out the Results link at the top.

U.S.A.: An excellent Training Newsletter to subscribe to
Columns, essays, commentaries “One aspect of a training program that many people overlook is the need for your body to rest and recover between workouts. Many dedicated athletes take their training very seriously, but they fail to recover adequately between workouts. They continue to push themselves excessively day after day which can lead to injuries, overtraining, and general fatigue.

There are several things that I would recommend for those of you who train intensely on a regular basis to help your body recover adequately between bouts of training. First, be sure to get plenty of sleep every night. Staying up late and getting up early several times a week will catch up with you after awhile. Adequate sleep is important to any athlete. At least seven hours (more if possible) is recommended.

U.S.A.: Supercross Classics DVD
Columns, essays, commentaries In the seasons preceding modern day supercross heroes Ricky Carmichael, the 14-time AMA National Champion and Jeremy McGrath, the seven-time supercross champion, there were the racers that have become icons in the sport. Bob Hurricane Hannah, Johnny OShow OMara, Mike Bell, David Bailey, Ricky Bad Boy Johnson, Jeff Ward, Ron Lechien, Jeff Stanton and more were the racers that helped put supercross on the map and create opportunities for todays racers. From the sold out stadiums to the diverse fan base, these are some of the athletes that have paved the way for the sport of supercross.

U.S.A.: Another night, another night show
Columns, essays, commentaries Anaheim California -. After making last weeks night program and then crashing out, Ryan Lockhart spent the week practicing with supercross regulars Sean Hamblin, Mike Brown and the rest of the Rockstar team. Having the experience and confidence to know he can make the night program, Nova Scotia’s “NEWF” would attempt to better his results from last week, but most importantly have fun.

British Columbia: Andrew McCarthy Spree Lance Writing
Columns, essays, commentaries They say the strongest memory associations we develop are those which are linked to our olfactory system – our sense of smell. This past weekend I was reminded of this (pardon the pun) as Brizzy and I wound our bikes through a tangly system of trails linking the woods roads and snowmobile paths that circumnavigate the 30kms of Deer Lake, Newfoundland. Though we enjoyed a great morning, about half way through our ride we decided to detour through the woods behind the main powerhouse at the upper end of the pond in an attempt to locate some more challenging and technical terrain. Unfortunately for us we ended up on a terribly boggy down slope and while our every instinct screamed for us to stop and turn around – we continued our descent hoping that we would eventually strike bottom and more secure footing.
