National: JSR Undefeated-Huffman Breaks Through - Morias & Klatt Sweep
Posted by: Chris on Jun 29, 2004 - 03:39 PM

Pro Outdoor Motocross On their home turf at Blackfoot Motorcycle Park in Calgary, Team Honda Canada Blackfoot Thor Racing extended their winning streak by taking the overalls for the day in the 125 West and 250 National Championships. Even though the competition continued to import riders from the U.S. to upset the team, they were unsuccessful. The Team Honda riders were untouchable on their potent CR and CRF machines.

Dusty Klatt and Ryan Morais were again a lethal combination in the 125cc while Jean Sebastien Roy and Damon Huffman took charge of the 250cc. Since Round 1 in Nanaimo, Klatt and Morais have been chalking up consecutive 1-2 overalls in the 125 West points chase. This weekend, they again cleaned shop. In the first moto, Morais moved into the lead with Klatt in a close third. They were feeling some heat from the increasingly agitated competition. However, by the eight minute mark the two Honda riders were running a solid 1-2. After the Kawasaki of Colton Facciotti cased the rhythm section, grounding him in third, and his teammate Teddy Maier developed engine problems, Morais and Klatt were totally without competition and raced their own race. Morais gave way to Klatt late in the moto for the win and gain some valuable points in the title chase as the pair bested the closest competition by a devastating 49 seconds. In the second moto the Honda CRFs again moved to the front pack as Morais took the lead followed closely by Facciotti and Klatt. Although Klatt had just come off of an outstanding 250 National moto, in which he snared second place, he rode brilliantly to take a fourth at the finish line. This gave Klatt second overall for the day while Morais extended his win streak to two, taking the overall with a 2-1 finish. Team Honda has now won every 125 west moto in convincing style. Heading into the final round of the series only a six points spread separates leader Klatt from Morais. For the third weekend in a row Jean Sebastien Roy went 1-1 to take the 250 overall, extending his series lead by 36 points. Huffman and Klatt also had brilliant race day results, garnering valuable points in the series. In the first 250 moto quick starter Klatt grabbed the holeshot while JSR gated fifth. Huffman, meanwhile, found himself at the back of the pack with his work cut out for him. Although Klatt was totally on the gas he could not fend of Roy; at the 10 minute mark Klatt had to let his teammate go by. Huffman charged hard through the pack, clawing his way into sixth by the end of the moto. At the finish, Roy enjoyed a 34 second lead over Klatt. Separating second place Klatt from Suzuki mounted John Dowd was another 24-seconds. The second moto proved to be interesting as the Team Honda riders did not enjoy their usual up-front starts. With Klatt on the sidelines after two exhaustive 125 motos and one 250, JSR and Huffman were the only Blackfoot riders on the track. After gating outside of the top ten, both riders put on a show that was second to none. JSR made quick work of the competition taking the lead by the 10 minute mark while Huffman was in fifth. As JSR lay down a commanding lead Huffman picked off the competition one by one to move into second place. By the checkered flag JSR had a 20 second lead on Huffman. JSR now holds a commanding lead in the series while Huffman is tied for third, only three points out of second. Klatt, while having only completed three of the six motos, sits a solid 10th overall. The effort and commitment from everyone on the team and our sponsors has been instrumental in our success to date, said team manager Jason Mitchell. We firmly believe it is the combination of great riders on quality race bikes with superb team support from our staff that has been the key. With a break in the series we need to stay focused on our goals and be ready for the final 125 West round in Regina, where we hope to meet the first of our championship goals for this season. Blackfoot Racing would like to extend a special thanks to all the team sponsors, the fans as well as the staff and volunteers at Blackfoot Motorcycle Park for their efforts in putting on a superb event again this year. And to our hospitality cook, Dean McFadden from Lethbridge Honda, a big thanks from everyone for being there every weekend!
